Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions:

Own root roses are grown on their own root. Cuttings are taken from a mother plant and propagated. This cutting will produce roots and grow into its own rose. Own root roses start out smaller and take a little more time to establish. After they establish they will be a much hardier plant. If the plant is cut to the ground it will come back the same rose. Own root plants have lasted hundreds of thousands of years.
Grafted roses begin with a rootstock. The rootstock is grown to maturity. After that a bud is taken from the desired variety and budded onto the rootstock. After the bud grows, the rootstock rose is cut away. Basically the roots of a rootstock rose and the top (plant and flowers) of the budded rose. Wholesale growers use this technique because it is quicker and more cost effective. A large rose can be sold to the customer. These roses generally have a shorter lifespan. The "bud union" is a week spot on the bush. Sometimes they will send out suckers of the root stock. Most of you have seen the small red flower of Dr. Huey all across the country. This is the sucker taking over.

Rose Care:

The best place to plant your rose is in full sun. It will still grow in partial shade, but may not thrive.
Watering depends on your soil conditions. Water daily when first planted. After established, water when the soil is dry. In the summer, this may be every day. Mulch is your best friend. Overwatering is as bad as underwatering. Place your finger into the soil or pot 2 inches. If it is moist no water is needed.
After planting we recommend water based fertilizers only(Miracle Grow). Apply after established and the plant begins to put on new growth. After the first year you can use a granular fertilizer in the spring and fall. Use a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 or 14-14-14. Apply around the dripline of the plant and scratch into soil. Make sure plant is well watered afterwards.
Your rose has been in the pot at our nursey since the beginning. We keep our roses in an environment that makes them tough. Don't worry about a few weeks to month in the pot. Just water well and if you plan on leaving it in the pot longer than a month, use water based fertilizer weekly.(Miracle Grow)
This depends greatly on soil conditions. As a general rule of thumb, dig a hole 2 times the width and depth of the container. Fill the hole with water and check drainage. If it drains or absorbs within 15 min then you are ok. If not, your soil will need amended. Place amended soil in the bottom of the hole to bring the base of the plant level to the ground. Fill in hole around the plant and lightly firm. Water daily until established. Never plant roses or any plant when the ground is saturated.
Absolutely! Mulch will help the soil retain moisture. Use your choice of mulch. We recommend pine bark mulch because it breaks down yearly and adds to the soil structure.
Most roses can be planted in containers. We recommend floribundas or shrub roses. Water regularly. In Oklahoma that could mean 3 times a day depending on temperature. Wicking pots are great for water retention.
If your soil has drainage issues it will need amending. We recommend a mixture of potting soil, peat moss, or mulch. Take the soil that you have removed from the planting hole and mix it with a 50/50 mixture of any of the above. If you have clay soil which many of us do, commercial top soil may have to be purchased.
